Great work done by Mr.Zareefji. The fact Rafisahab is the greatest playback singer in the film industry whether it is in India or abroad. He sang melodious songs in the hindi films. His songs has been hit whether it is bhajan, qawwali, sad, romantic or other type of songs. I like one of his song “Sukh ke Sab saathi” what a wonderful song it is (Bhajan).

All the adjectives in all the languages are not enough to describe the phenomenon that Rafi Sahab is. There have been many a good singer that our country has produced, from the Tansen era to today’s singers. But closely monitered, Rafi Sahab stands on a different pedestal altogether and there can be no comparison to him, ever. The perfect diction, the exact rendition and the special emphasis that Rafi Sahab used to give to some of the words in his songs, make his songs a rare breed. The ease with which he sang the most difficult songs is again incomparable. I am not giving any examples for all that I have said above, for there are far too many of them to be classified as ‘examples’. Indeed, they should be classified only as “antiques” and which cannot be duplicated or copied by any other human being. It is God’s own voice – that is our RAFI SAHAB. asmurty2@rediffmail.com

I fully agree with your topic that a clear-cut strategy may not have been evolved to attain our prime objective – that of conferrment of the BHARAT RATNA AWARD posthumously to the legend of legends MOHAMMED RAFI SAHAB.

There are many reasons for this and the solution may not be far to find. There are several groups and associations of RAFI SAHAB and there must be first a total co-ordination amongst them all. They must all come under one common umbrella and then evolve their campaign. There should not be any ‘one upmanship’ race among the various leading campaigners or associations, but a true and humble way of following the majority. I have seen a lot of good projects go astray just for this one reason – trying to beat the other person. Each and every RAFIAN is a true follower of Rafi Sahab’s ideals and whether they take active part or not does not belittle their stature or does not dilute their commitment. Some have the resources and some do not have them. The ‘haves’ must compensate for the ‘have-nots’, but must not sideline the latter. These should be the guiding principles for any campaign to kickstart and achieve the goals.

The campaign should be aggressive and multi-dimentional. For e.g., not a single day must be wasted and some activity or the other should be seen to be happening. Also, in today’s age, constant advertising and publicity is required. Not only should the campaign take a daily course, but it should also be seen as taking the daily course. Every music lover in the country (and Indians are generally music lovers) should know what is being done. For this the role of the media (print, visual and electronic) becomes all too important. Rafians who have recourse to these should highlight prominently the ‘reason’ for this campaign and the ’status’ of the campaign. Those of us use the internet as a daily staple, must use it to convey the progress of the campaign to all our contacts through emails and through our own blogs. Let the entire world be told that we RAFIANS will not rest until our only aim – BHARAT RATNA TO RAFI SAHAB – is achieved.

We have waited for 27 years since Rafi Sahab left this world. We are not prepared to wait any further. Let this become the slogan and mission of all those who profess by the name of Rafi Sahab. Do what you can within your limits. Every single act in this honourable direction, however small, will contribute towards the larger aim ahead of us.

Finally, Rafi Sahab was the greatest of all playback singers that India has provided. He is also the most respected. There are no controversies ever attached to his name. He was the most humane, humble and likeable human being the film industry and the country has known. His devotion towards his work, his family, his colleagues, his contemporaries, to unknown musicians and indeed to the country is itself a legendary tale and ranks as the prime reason why Rafi Sahab deserves the BHARAT RATNA the most. Leaders are known by their good deeds and not just because they happen to have occupied high offices. The political forces of the country would be doing the country and themselves an honour by conferring the highest civilian award of the country to Rafi Sahab. JAI RAFI SAHAB. JAI BHARAT RATNA CAMPAIGN BY THE RAFIANS.

One of the good thing of internet is that fans can communicate ans share songs etc. with each other. I was seeking for an answer and i think that i have found the answer. Both murty and narayanan are right regarding the greatness of rafi sahab. but it is a fact that mohd. rafi is not the greatest singer india has produced. he is only one of the greatest singers and it should be well noted that the southern film singer, ghantasala venkateshwara rao, is undisputably the greatest in terms of majestic and melodious voice, talent and musical skills in rendering all types of songs and other renditions. This southern singer popularly known by the name ghantasala, has to his credit 10,000 plus songs and was the musical king for 3 decades in the south. If a jury consisting of top music composers knowing both hindi and telugu languages decides on the comparison, it is sure that ghantasala will emerge as the greatest. The rafi fans to be true in spirit should not undermine this truth and make false claims before the government, that rafi sahab is the greatest, as that is not true pl. No competition has existed for ghantasala even when he lived and till today also (such is his spell and beauty in his voice) whereas rafi was overtaken by kishore kumar. then how can rafi be the greatest.

what i have stated in my earlier message is real fact please and has nothing to do with the campaign of rafi sahab fans for the highest civilian award. my only view is that they should try for the award by placing true facts and not placing disputable and false facts and getting the award either by hook or crook.

I fully support the views of Mr.Murty and Narayan and millions and crores of Rafi fans but not in line with Mr.Vitthal who is a Ghantasala fan. Gantasala may be a great singer from south. For that matter even Yesudas and SP Balasubramaniam are also greats. But even these top singers from south or north or east or west admit and place Rafi Saab on top for reasons known to all except Vitthal. Lastly, how can Mr.Vittal say, Rafi Saab was overtaken by Kishore etc. Does he mean that Since Sir Donald Bradman, the greatest ever cricketer has scored only 29 centuries and 6996 runs at an averge of 99.94 and was overtaken by our own Sunil Gavaskar (34 centuries and 10000 odd runs) and Sachin Tendulkar (38 centuries and 11000 odd runs, both with an average of only 50 plus can be regarded as No.1 & 2. Just as Bradman is to Cricket, our Rafi Saab is to Music. Why does not Vitthal say, Lata Mangeshkar was overtaken by Asha Bhonsle,Alka Yagnik,Sunidi chauhan etc. Pl. do not spoil the campaign by misguiding the people. Whether Rafi Saab gets the award or not, Rafi Saab Himself is an Award to the country given to us by the Almighty.

    Ramaswamy ji,

I have never disputed rafi’s greatness but only was of the view that the approach being adopted for the award should be on true lines rather than on false facts. Regarding ghantasala, i do not know about your knowledge about him. If you are a telugu person, could you kindly comment on the songs of this esteemed legend like siva sankari, madi sarada devi etc. along with his innumerable padyams, slokas, bhagavad gita etc. which have whatsover no comparison or similarity at all times which ensured that no similar talent or competition or such attraction ever exists. Does rafi have such type of renderings. I do not dispute about rafi sahab’s greatness who was a undisputable great legend in his own field. Further ghantasala’s talent and command over telugu and sanskrit languages and perfection in music is 100% as compared to imperfect and incomplete command over hindi language by rafi. only’s rafi’s melodious voice is swaying people, but if you look in total sum these defects of not pure hindi language and pronounciation etc. complete perfection in sum total is ruled out. Whereas in ghantasala songs, whatever is his rendering it was completely perfect in totality and there is absolutely no complaint from any angle, language, musical skill, melody etc. This fact is not denied by any southern musician and whereas i heard from many people regarding rafi’s disadvantage of hindi language as well as sanskrit language because he had a punjabi accent. do you know lata mangeshkar has once said ghantasala’s voice to be incomparable. and as per your statement, i wish to clarify that no body has been able to overtake lata mangeshkar, it is your view. regarding kishore kumar overtaking rafi, i wish to enlighten you that kishore got the best singer award in 70’s, when rafi was still there. As long as ghantasala lived, he got the best singer award for his entire career and never the award slipped from him throughout his life despite your favourite singers jesudas and spb in the field along with ghantasala. What do you say. Oon balance thus, ghantasala not only in his achievements, but also in skills and talents has definitely has an edge over rafi.

But sorry to state, i am not here to compare rafi and ghantasala, who are two great stalwarts in indian music, and such comparison also should not be made as both are two corners of the same coin. I had to resort to such commentary only to drive away your false views.

my view was only that legend like rafi should be not be drawn into undesirable political motives in false lines, rather he should be honoured in a honourable way.

    ramaswamy ji,

i want to continue as i missed some important point pl. In the 60’s the government of andhra pradesh has written to the then central government that ghantasala is a incomparable film singer with incomparable melodious voice and talent and recommended for the padmavibhushan award for ghantasala, But only on sheer political moves, that a southern singer would get recognition, the then central govt. conferred only padmashri on ghantasala.Today You are telling about award for rafi that too only through effort of some fans, wheras for ghantasala, the govt. of andhra pradesh itself has recognised him long ago.

  • #39 written by n.g.ramaswamy
    January 15, 2008 - 11:53 am

    Vitthalji,

This debate can go on and on. While on one hand, you say Rafi Saab and Ghantasala are two sides of the same coin, on the other hand you hit Rafi Saab’s pronunciation. Mind you, there is nobody or for that matter there never was and never ever will be any pandit or crooner to come half way near Rafi Saab’s pronunciation. Even his Sanskrit Slokas viz.Gurur Brahma Gurur Vishnu in the beginning of the song “Jahan Dal Dal Par” was applauded by learned pandits. Secondly, when you say Andhra Pradesh Govt. in the sixties recommended Ghantasala’s name for Padma Vibhushan award saying he is incomparable, I can only reply through a saying “a man with full nose is a king in the land of men with only half noses”. Rafi saab’s mellifluous voice and renderings directly reach the souls. His divine voice is a tonic for patients in hospital bed, people in distress, couples in a honeymoon, for kids in school, for priests in temples, for the lovers in a marriage, for jawans in the battlefield, for a joker in a comedy circus, & so on, the list is endless. Even after 27 years after his departure to the other world, his voice is ringing in our ears. Is it the same with Shri Ghantasala? Then why don’t the Andhra Pradesh govt. recommend his name for Bharat Ratna or for that matter his fans recommend. One thing is clear, I also do not want to spoil the sheen of the award by mentioning so many names but my point is when Lata Mangeshkar can get it, Rafi Saab should also have got it much earlier. In your case Ghantasala should have got it. But you don’t support the candidature of Ghantasala with proper evidence. You are only playing hide and seek with Rafi Saab and Ghantasala wherein Ghantasala is only hiding and Rafi Saab is only emerging out. With due respect to Shri Ghantasala, I conclude Rafi Saab is the greatest.

    Ramaswamy ji,

You pl. believe or not, it is upto you, i can only say what i have said is true with pure heart. I never disputed whatever you said about rafi. Whatever you said about rafi equally applies to ghantasala whose voice continues to sway millions of andhraites today also after his departure 35 years ago, whereas in case of rafi it is only 27 years. (pl. see website of ghantasala, you will know). like rafi ghantasala’s voice is also a light to the patients, honeymoon couple etc. as you said. Do you know spb’s quotation, there is no singer like ghantasala in the past nor in future pl. Similarly, p b srinivas, a famous singer of the south, termed voice of ghantasala as impregnable and unimaginable. jesudas as termed it as a voice which gave a turning point to the south indian music and is a continuing light for the musicians. s. janaki, has termed ghantasala as the stalwart of indian film music. p. suseela, the lata mangeshkar of the south, termed ghantasala as ‘the master’. similarly, v a k ranga rao, a famous music critic, in the south, has termed voice of ghantasala as the most majestic voice of india. The hindi music director, shankar jai kishan duo, has stated voice of ghantasala to be excellent. I would appreciate, if you could kindly confirm that you are greater than spb and other singers here. I will close my issue.
one more point sir, you hear the same songs sung by rafi in hindi and by ghantasala in telugu, you will yourself know range and voice of ghantasala and who is the greatest. After hearing, pl. do not forget to post your views. since ghantasala had been a regional figure, his popularity has limitations. If rafi had been a regional figure, same would have been his fate. similarly, if ghantasala had been associated with the hindi language, he too would have fared similarly to rafi or even greater. This is only the main difference between both.

one more point sir, the aforesaid southern singers have equal regard and respect for rafi which is beyond dispute. again i say, it is you who are arguing about rafi and against ghantasala, whereas it is not the same case with me.

i again repeat that let there be a demand for bharat ratna or even greater award for rafi, (i will be the happiest man if he gets it), but let it come through a honourable way but not on basis of false facts please.

    mr n g ramaswamy ji,

i too agree with mr. vitthal ji, I am a maharashtrian and not a telugu man. I have heard few of ghantasala renderings, which have a mellifluous and heart rendering effect. you cannot say that rafi is superior to ghantasala and that is not true. Ghantasala’s voice is also a super divine voice pl.

anyhow, my issue is different. As vittal ji, observed in his earlier messages, kishore kumar has certainly overtaken rafi, and kishore was the most sought after singers in the 70’s despite rafi being available. kishore’s voice had great influence on the people and the then music directors of hindi film music. If you hear duo songs of both viz., bane chahe dushman jamana hamara, yaadon ki barat etc. kishore has a definite edge over rafi. You hence cannot say that rafi is the greatest singer in bollywood.

Even manna dey despite his great regard for rafi, has termed kishore as a irreplaceable singer.

My views are, i too say that it is better to stop this begging business of getting awards for a singer who departed more than 25 years ago, which will not serve any purpose. even if he gets award posthumously, what will happen. Even if he does not get, heavens are not going to fall. If you fans have such determination and resources, i request you to please recommend and advise the government (along with your fans) with some well determined policies which will be beneficial to the people of india and upliftment of country rather than these bharat ratna or anything which will not serve any purpose to you, neither me or any body else.

    Dear Vitthalji & Rajji,

OK. considering that both are unique and equal in all respects, the boiling point is pronunciation of Rafi Saab’s Hindi vs. Ghantasalaji’s Telugu. How come you say Rafi Saab’s pronunciation is not proper? This is a layman’s comment. I think you have overlooked certain facts and figures.

Secondly, when Raj is supporting your comment of Kishoreda overtaking Rafi Saab, I only wish to read my earlier comments thoroughly i.e. Sunil Gavaskar and Sachin Tendulkar overtaking Sir Donald Bradman’s record. See the statistics: Bradman, the greatest of all time played only 52 tests and scored 6992 runs with 29 centuries at an average of 99.94, whereas Sunil & Sachin scored 10000 and 11000 odd runs with 34 centuries and 38 centuries at an average of 50 plus only in 125 tests and 145 tests resp. Now you know the meaning of overtaking. Where was Kishoreda upto 1970s eventhough he started his career as a singer in 1955 itself. It is only due to some politics in the bollywood Rafi Saab got lesser songs compared to sixties and fifties and even then he remained numero uno in the seventies and till his departure. It is also customary in the film industry for a singer to praise other singer and vice versa so as to maintain the relationship. You yourself say Shri Ghantasalaji is only a regional figure. The argument ends there itself. Forget the Bharat Ratna Award, these singers are awards to the country itself given by the almighty. We must see to it that the sheen is not lost by unwanted arguments.

    Thanks

The sudden demand from Mr. Ram Vilas Paswan for the Bharat Ratna to be given posthumously to Mohd. Rafi Sahab has come a little too late in the day. However, first things first. Mr. Paswan should be congratulated for having named Rafi Sahab for this prestigious award, when all the other political parties were naming persons from their own clan. Since many political parties have jumped in this frenzy of naming their choices, the scene is getting to become uglier by the day. I feel Rafi Sahab’s name should not be in the race with the likes of some of the persons whose names have been suggested by some of the parties. And cheap and dirty politics was bound to show its ugly face, considering the nature of Indian political parties behaviour over the last several decades. But while all these are facts, one should draw the best mileage out of this murky situation and take up the threads from here. Time is certainly not in our favour and we may not realize our dream this year. But having come thus far, we should not approach first Mr. Ram Vilas Paswan and then many of the other political parties, cultural organizations, members of parliaments, the media and the citizens of the country through various fora and see that the campaign for honouring Rafi Sahab with the country’s highest civilian award gains strength resulting in achieving the same atleast by next year. One should forget the comments by political parties over the name of Rafi Sahab taken by Ram Vilas Paswan, for it is in their blood to rake up such mistaken and unorthodox theories. Also, the people of the country can very well see through their game and will not fall pray anymore. Given the right projection by the organizations concerned, this campaign can still see the light and Indians will rise to the occasion as one man when it comes to the name of Rafi Sahab. LONG LIVE RAFI SAHAB – the ultimate in Gayiki.

    ramaswamy ji,

Rafi is not donald bradman pl. Because donald bradman was a man of 40’s and sachin tendulkar is a man of 90’s – vast time period difference and environmental and other conditions play major role hence and accordingly no comparison can be made between both.

But rafi, ghantasala and kishore all belonged to the approximaely same period and almost same conditions (though kishore’s period was somewhat more). this point should be noted and cannot be overlooked.

Secondly, do you know that rafi is not in any way nearer or greater than mahatma gandhi, swami vivekananada, saint thyagaraja like personalities and their achievements and who were not bestowed any award and who also rejected award or honours when conferred upon them. That is a true and complete individual and not your favourite pl.

    Ramaswamy ji and others,

This argument regarding comparison between the stalwarts has undergone many proportions and discussions in different sites of rafi sahab as well as ghantasala garu, and i personally fee that both ghantasala garu and rafi sahab are equally great. So sir’s let us close the issue here and i fully correspond and agree to your views that these singers are indeed gifts of almighty to the earth.

Now, let us share some happy moments. Sri rafi sahab’s name has indeed been recommended for the Bharat ratna award and let us hope and wish that the legend of bollywood gets the award on due and honourable lines without paving way for any political hitches.

    Rajji,

For your kind information, you have started comparing Rafi Saab even with Mahatma Gandhiji, Swami Vivekanandji, Saint Tyagarajaji when comparisons with all bollywood and tollywood personalities got exhausted, it seems. This itself is a great achievement for Rafi Saab from a non-Rafi follower. In your opinion, all the Bharat Ratna awardees so far post Mahatma Gandhiji, S.Vivekanandji and St.Tyagarajaji don’t deserve this award at all. Very excellent observation and comments.

Mr.Paswan is a politican, and when he is demanding about Bharat Ratna to Mohdrafi is a good indication from political view and as a central government. Rafisahab should be given Bharat ratna award this time, being a singer he was a great human being and helped many poor artists also. So, his dedication in his whole life was a superb and genius person.

Apropos the comments on this site on Rafi Sahab, Ghantasala, Sir Donald Bradman, Sachin Tendulkar, Lataji, Ashaji, Sunnidhi Chauhan (have I missed any of the others), I have gone through most of the debate by most of you. I was disgusted with the unnecessary war of words in another site on similar lines and had stopped visiting those pages. We are drifting away from the topic for which this column was intended. The topic is and remains – BHARAT RATNA MOHD RAFI SAHAB, How can it be done??. Let other matters take a back seat for the time being and let us be guided with your positive suggestions and comments on this honourable campaign. I hope this will bring out the latent feelings that we all have on Rafi Sahab and his life and times.

Whether Ghantashala was equal to, worse than or better than Rafi is not relevant here. Rafi’s voice has influenced the careers of more actors than anyone else’s in history. It has touched the lives of more Indians than even Lata. In their happiness, sadness, marriage, every single mood. He is an epitome of humility and a personified protest against all vices that exist in Bollywood. He has sung the best Bhajans in Hindi movies despite being a Muslim.. People across religions and across ages love him, musicians adored him.
If Ghantashala was restricted to his regional limits and could not touch the lives of numerically more Indians, bad luck. My admiration yet sympathy lies with him. That way, being a Bengali I can argue that lot of Bengali singers did not get their due because they were regional. How many Indians have heard of Sandhya Mukherjee who has as sweet a voice as Lata Mangeshkar? How about Uttam Kumar who was more popular in Bengal than Amitabh? The award is “Bharat Ratna”-lets not forget the “Bharat” part of it. We will think of Ghantashala when it comes to “Dakshin Bharat Ratna” (when we invent such an award).

I have clearly mentioned in my objective of this site (for that you can see my video on the homepage) that I am not a subscriber of the idea of comparison. This site is not for doing comparison between Mohd. Rafi and other great singers of India.

In my view artists should not be compared with each other, in fact they can not be compared, because for comparison we need similar parameters which is not possible in fields like singing, music or art.

This discussion is going to nowhere and has been deflected from its original topic.

i understand ur point fully but i cant agree with it fully
u say this time is not good but then tell me which time we shud wait for?
bharat ratna and politics are so much intermingled that it is almost impossible to drag those two apart.
in bengali we have a saying, chorer upor rag kore matite bhat khaoa meaning chor ke upar gussa karke zameen pa baith ke khana khana as the thief seals ur plates everytime u buy. is it the way to protest to the activities of the theif? no.
similarly, rejecting bharat ratna isnt a good signal to be sent, the protest shud be in other forms

on ndtv india (hindi) there was this discussion on whether political parties have politicized the bharat ratna issue this year. this was on 19th jan at 8.30 p.m. participants included mr manu singhvi (congress), mr prakash javdekar (Bjp), one ex-cabinet secretary of the government and also mr ramvilas paswan. the anchor initially asked mr paswan the reasons for suggesting the names of mahatma phule and mohd rafi sahab by him. to this mr paswan informed that it was the bjp first which raked up the name of mr atal bihari vajpayee and then the bsp which named mr kanshiram and the politicisation of the bharat ratna award was started by these parties and not by mr paswan. mr paswan went on to add that both mahatma phule and mohd rafi sahab were no more unlike the bjp’s candidate. also, during their entire life, both these names were never associated with any controversy. lastly, mr paswan argued that when lata mangeshkar could be given the bharat ratna, why not mohd rafi saha, who was her parallel in the music world. there were other view points by the other participants which are not necessary to be mentioned here. there was also a chance for viewers to air their views through sms on 56388 to which i sent the following – mohammed rafi sahab bharat ke sachhe ratna hai – and this was found on the ticker scroll from 8.45p.m. to the end of the programme. readers may also send email to ndtv to muk@ndtv.com on this specific subject. asmurty2@rediffmail.com

Zareef bhai, for u I can say only what Rafi sahab said long ago
Achcho ko bura saabit karna duniya ki purani aadat hai
Bharat Ratna ko mubarak chiz samajh , mana ke bahat badnaam hai ye

may be Paswas is playing muslim card, but again it is better card(Rafi sahab , I mean) than some of those played by politicians.
At least, the signal to the youth today, which is much into violence today(one reason being the disruptie music culture, with gone era of melody the ’sabr’ of hearing a good music is gone and i feel psychologically this being one reason of youth being unrestful, unruly music makes the soul of its listener unruly and u can replace the word unrul iwth unholy also) will be good.
let paswan sahab win at least once in the election, but with this award youths will be redirected to the golder era of music and this world will became more worthy of living
i myself belong to the young generation, and this is my personal view of course
    regards

Ya it is nice to hear that a politican demanding Bharat Ratna for the Legend, although it might have been done just for gaining some political support. As Zarif bhai thinks that it is not the right time for the demand made, i somewhat would like to support him because this will b more of a political award rather than an award given for his great talent. So when will the right time come for this award..? yes this is a million dollar questiion.I hope this will come soon. The time will come when the forgotten Rafi’s voice by today’s generation will again hit back and the people will get reminded of his contribution in the field of music across the world. We are on the way to make it possible. I hope the day is not far away when there will be urgency to award him with Bharat Ratna.

Now that the Government has finally left the Bharat Ratna undecided for the seventh year in a row, we must focus our energies to achieve the same for Rafi Sahab atleast next year. The need of the hour is not to lose precious time but the campaign must go on. All the time tested avenues must be explored afresh and the Government must be made ‘aware’ of the stark reality of the greatness of this one single individual who deserves this coveted award more than anyone else. The Rafi Foundation should put its act together and all those who can work for this most noble cause, need to keep the campaign as their cherished aim. Efforts made in right earnest will yield positive results although it may seem to take some time.

One of my all-time favourite from Rafi Sahab’s collections. It is one of the greatest picturisations in the history of Indian cinema and Rafi Sahab has given such a sober rendering in this song that just listening to the audio version also gives us all the expressions. Suited to the acting of Guru Dutt Sahab to the hilt.

Mohammed Rafi was a great singer, kind human being, having faith in God, and caring for all. He used to get deeply involved into the situation, and the hero for whom he was to sing the song. There are many songs of Mohd. Rafi, which I heard once and I remembered the complete song. I enjoy seeing movies having Rafi songs. I had spent time discussing with Rafi sahab about my special choices and I have everything in my memory. I asked him instantly which song he remembers if I say Rajendra kumar, Shammi Kapoor, Johny Walker, Mehmood, Jeetendra, Vishajeet, Shashi Kapoor, Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand, for which I Shared my song and then he came with his one line with my request. I will keep on sharing my moments with him as I know very few Rafi lovers got the opportunity to meet him, I mean common people like me. I am happy to see the site and hope I will continue to see more. Thank you.

Regarding your suggestion for providing links for mp3 format songs of Rafi Sahab, let us get in touch through emails and then perhaps we can all share these immortal songs. I consider myself extremely on several accounts and most important among them is to have lived in a time when the angel like voice of Rafi was enchanting the Indian sub-continent. He is revered by his fans and will continue to be so revered, he was envied by every single singer of his time and he will continue to be envied by singers of all times to come in all SAARC countries.

May Allah make him a part of Jannaat, or else it will remain incomplete.

Super Star Rajesh Khanna – The Cary Grant of India
Super Star Rajesh Khanna irrevocably impacted Indian cinema and culture like no actor before him. His acting perfection and application of talent were drawn solely from his inward vision. Super Star Rajesh Khanna did not cultivate the phenomenal attributes that created his “superstardom” by reason or will, but through the connectedness to his own persona that the masses then idealized. For he is one who is impervious as to who is ahead and who is behind. Super Star Rajesh Khanna’s inward vision, a special gift from the divine leads him always. Today he is the indomitable and highly respected veteran of one hindred and fifty films. For me, he is like the Cary Grant of India. Both actors are Capricorns that have played the widest variety of roles without ever bankrupting the fascination of the audience. Super Star Rajesh Khanna is the platinum standard for landmark performances and sheer screen presence. Ever since the camera discovered his photogenia it has been having a love affair with it. His Byronic inspirations of romance as autographed elegantly on screen endure. Super Star Rajesh Khanna is a Greatest Legend because he kindles our affections at the highest denominators and that is a life nobly lived means.

Your website is very good on Mohd Rafi. Why dont u post on your website of All Audio & Video songs of Super Star Rajesh Khanna.

    • Super Star Rajesh Khanna – The original phenomenon of Indian cinema
He is an unique mix of style and substance. Super Star Rajesh Khanna rewrote cinematic performance’s syntax, yet will be remembered as a peerless romantic hero forever. He has established himself as a most successful Superstar-Actor-both as a romantic hero and a most versatile serious actor, who can perform emotions and inner feelings with depth effortlessly. He ruled Bollywood like no one else before as well as after him. His class movies like Anand, Aradhna, Dushman, Haathi Mere Saathi, Amar Prem, Avataar, Prem Nagar, Amar Deep, Dard, Babu, Amrit, etc., etc., etc. got him a place of honour in Indian cinema’s hall of fame in such a manner that nobody can be matched with him in terms of balancing artistic and commercial aspects simultaneously.

Rafi sahib was above religious, race, cast, political, national and even commercial differences. As a Rafi-family friend, and neighbour in London, for over 50 years, I am honoured to have met the most humble, honourable and modest man that I ever knew in my whole lifetime. Rafi still continues to entertain millions around the world. That make Rafi and his voice immortal. He politely refused to copy other singers in case they get offended. “Kehta hai koi dil gaya dil bar gaya. Sahil hai pukarta samandar chala gaya. Jo baat sach hai kehta nahin koi, keh es dunya se musiqi ka payambar chala gaya,” according to one tribute to Rafi sahib by the great poet Gulzar. That sums up the late great singer Mohammed Rafi. So, is it fair to compare him with others, alive or dead? Some of his best songs are available subscription free at http://www.youtube.com/spsyed – a website dedicated to the entertainers and their fans. Enjoy, comment, rate, provide feedback, subscribe, join as friends, and share it far and wide.

Rafi sahab was versatile When I was with him during my childhood, I noticed his speaking for hours with star he was to record a song for.He used to understand the voicelevel of Shammiji,Johneysahab,Dilipkumarjee,Devsahab and also Guru Duttjee. So many songs were recoded by various Music Director but no one could make out that it was sung by Rafisahab.Take examples of Muze dunyawalon,Din Dhal Jaye,Main Bambai ka Babu,Jangal Mein Mor Nacha,Udhar Tum Hassen Idhar Dil Jawan hain,….all the melodyoous songs seem to be sung by relavant actors and not by Rafi sahab. But the credit goes to Rafisahab 100% Therefore he is the best. I found no other singer could exercise as above and sung. Crores of salutes to Rafisahab

Melodies are created by musicians under relavant music directors and then the composition taskes places for a star
Singer is a part of melodious songs. Talatji sung many numbers for defferant casts and there were appreciated for his velvet voice. Rafi sir being versetile sung for many faces and all were worldly appreciated by the brillient brains.Unfortunately… Today there is no melody in music, I found no good singer, eventhen we do enjoy wel with OLDIES
    Thanks…….

    Dear Zareef,

Many many thanks for your effort to create this website of the legend Mohd Rafi. The hevenly voice !! I never sleep without listening to atleast one song of my all time favourite Rafi. I am 65 yrs now and even today I have not heard any parallel to him. There are many who do sing like him but as you said Rafi has his own personality in his every song and his own mental and sentimental involvement shorn of all money and publicity.

Thank U…………..I shall as and when I feel like adding, shall do so.

I was born in 1960 in a middle class Bengali family. My late father was a good singer. We used to hear lot of songs from radio but all were bengali songs. Several great singers were available in Bengal during those days. Till 1972-73, I had practically no idea about Md. Rafi. In the year 1974, on the day of Saraswati Puja (during February) I first heard the song Yeh Duniya Yeh Mahfil. I was so mesmerished that I can not explain. For the first time in my life I felt an inexplicable joy deep inside my heart. I started crying. I asked my Didi (who is reasonably good singer) about the singer and she told me about Md. Rafi. That was time of Rajesh Khanna and Kishore Kumar. That day was the turning point in my life. Since that day, I developed deepest love for Rafi saab. I am a senior officer of ONGC, so for office work I visited Mumbai several times and almost everytime I have visited Rafi Saabs grave and put flowers. During young days I used to say “God take me, give Rafi back” but now-a-days I tell everybody that excepting Rafi saab all other singers (Nurzahan to Shreya Ghosal and from Saigal to Sonu Nigam) had God gifted voices but Rafi saab’s voice was God’s own voice. On 4th October’s Times of India (Kolkata edition), Manna Dey gave an interview after being selected for Dada Saheb Phalke award. The heading of the article was “Rafi was a better singer that me.” Salute to Manna Dey for accepting the fact.

Rafi Sahab sang several songs for Rajesh Khanna, notably for Do Raste, the duet of Aradhana, Aan Milo Sajna, Mehboob Ki Mehendi, Haathi Mere Saathi, etc. The song, ‘Yeh Reshmi Zulfein” is a more popular number though I like the songs : TERI MEHFIL MEIN AAYA SHAYAR KOI MASTANA TERE LIYE and PASAND AA GAYI HAI IK KAAFIR HASEENA for the velvety touch that Rafi Sahab brought in both the songs.

It is not always that we come across such selfless souls. You will continue to inspire us. On a personal note, I thank you profusely for re-introducing me to Chopraji of Allahabad who was my erstwhile colleague in Bank Of India. I had the pleasure of talking to him after maybe 30 years ! dear binajee,

a very nice narrative of the get together of rafi bhakts on the 14th.

the guests from other cities were an ensemble of talent and a picture of poise, rather friendly and highly entertaining.

murthygaru is a very good leader, ably supported by a rather silent, smiling nrp sahab.

these guests and rafi fans egroup members did have a roaring time together on the 15th too and it was practically visible that they were carrying extremely fantastic thoughts and memories of their time spent with the rafi bhakts in bengaluru.

these kind of interactions widen our horizons and we learn more on rafi sahab who is world on his own, the more you dig the more you get.

binajee, i am very pleased reading what you have written and shall be commenting on your article on mohdrafi.com too.

I have been on Mr. Murty’s site many times and seen his Name and comments on various other sites which has anything to do with Md. Rafi, even his email Id reflects his passion for Rafi songs, he was the brain behind this Rafi holiday. Thank you Murty saab for making this happen.

All in THE e group of Rafi fans Bangalore are aware of NRP ’s style of writing , the command he has over the language, both Hindi and English, listening to him sing was pleasure.

Sivaram, singing was excellent, his daughter Shanti sang inspite of not keeping well.Later in the evening listening to Sivaram’s knowledge of Mahabharat was great.

Chander and his wife Radha sang like professional singers.,His jokes ” chuah se kaun dartha hai … was good , proving to be a total entertainer.

Elias, your singing especially the high notes, Shaik saab it was too good, making us wish we had more time, and i feel it was good we did not have quiz and spent more time singing.

Sanjay , wish you had brought your son along and he could listen to Elias’ singing live . I plan to sell the idea of using mobile to listen to your favorite singer ( What an Idea Sir Ji ! ! ), please bring the Jr Deshpande next time ( hope its sooner )

Padmanabhan , you choosing to sing a Mukesh song was great , though many feel Mukesh sang only sad songs well, I think “khabi khabi mere dil mein is a very very romantic song, ( Ravi bhai , I have one more supporter in Padmanabhan.

Sreesha of course took a leaf from Zareef and probably decided to just like the meethai rather than make them and be the halwai.

Satyendra was totally enjoying himself playing with Ciya .

Srinivasan , your choice of songs was as good as your singing.Vediocon sales will increase with your presence.

Shailaja’s singing Rafi’s song shows what jaadhu his song have.

Jagat Tarkas , whistling was a treat, like Nikhra ji said , wish we could have had more of it. I have heard him on the CD, it is too good , please let us know when the next vol will be launched.

HV Gurumurthy, my Guru bhai ( we are from the same college ) singing was a surprise , a very pleasant surprise, especially the “aathi kya khandala…

Mahaveer, and his son Karan as always as expected were very good.

Zareef bhai jab bhi aap halwai baney , aap jase bhi methai bbanyah hum zaroor khayangay.

Nikhra ji ka singing ka jawaab nahin

Ramesh bhai agali baar please Timbaktoo ka National Anthem bhi sunanaa.

Ravi bhai invocation in the begining , surely showed its effects.

Anoop’s singing,he can change his profession any day.

First and foremost, I accept with all humility the gracefulness of Anoop Kulkarni and you, besides Ravishankar, Suman Gupta and all the others from Bangalore for having readily accepted our idea of spending quality time with Rafi-bhakts of Chennai and Bangalore and for all the excellent arrangements that you all looked into. We have never been privy to such extravagant hospitilaity that you and all others in Bangalore extended to those of us who are from other cities. The oft used phrase “like minded persons” was all too evident for this was indeed a meeting of various music lovers with almost identical thoughts and perspectives. An exercise that would be so successful was never in doubt by any one of us, but the stupendous bang that it generated assures of better tidings for all the Rafi-bhakts in future. We intended to forget the rest of the world for two days and enjoy in total bliss some of the most fascinating works in Hindi film music and that is exactly how it turned out to be. We ran away from the complexicities of life in general and this short holiday that we afforded ourselves will last a lifetime of contentment. Thanks for your wonderful narration.

    Hello ASM,

A beautiful descrption of a fantastic event – those of who were thousands of miles away participated in spirit if not in person. I didn’t sleep on the night of the 13th in Toronto – bacuase I was awake with you all, who, 9.5 hours ahead, were having the time of your lives under the benificence of Rafi saab.

    And thought:

Saaqiya aaj mujhe neend naheen ayegi…
suna hai teri mehfil mein rat jaga hai.

    Thanks for sharing, sir!

    dearest murtygaaru,

thanx a ton for a fantastic write up, as we know you, you have really lifted our spirits by your adjectives and encouragement, surely kindling fond thoughts for more such gatherings in the near future.

what really impresses me and fills my heart with immense joy is of the very unique idea of ” rafi holiday “. rf-hyderabad has started something which will never die down and has effectively brought joy into so many rafi bhakts all over.

those bhakts in other corners of india and abroad are already dreaming of their definite presence in the next rafi holiday – irrespective of where it would be held.

now dont you feel this is incredible – yes – only an avataar like rafi sahab could have kindled such feelings in us.

murtygaaru – your esteemed self along with nrpbhai & others at rf-hyderabad made all this possible and i feel you all deserve a solid, warm and loving ” pat ” on the back.

words cannot truely and effectively express the greatness of what you all have done. keep it up – we have the genuine blessings of an ever smiling rafi sahab and all that we do will meet with thumping success and epoch making.

my personal fears with regard to self would be my unavailability – if the rafi holdiays are conducted other than between September and December. i would in all probability be at sea ( paapi pet kaa savaal ) and all at sea missing you all.

    Ramesh Bhaiyya,

Good covergae. In fact, the two days just flew off what with so many Rafi Bhakts, so many Rafi songs, sumptuous food, nice arrangements, etc. Looking forward to next such meet. I am really enjoying the Vol. II of the MP3 after completing Vol. I. Very nice songs containing apart from the usual popular numbers, also some songs which were popular during the films release and some ‘not heard at all’ songs.

    Murthygaru,

I have couple of suggestions to make such programs more interesting. The personnel who are attending such meets are all REAL Rafi Bhakts, not all of them are singers and beacuse of paucity of time, all the persons will not get oppertunity to sing. But every one should be made to involve themselves in the activities otherwise, most of them will lose interest. In fact, precisely for this reason, we at Bangalore, have introduced activities like Antakshri and Quiz so that more people can be covered. Let us also think about all the persons (singers or non-singers), who come with lot of interest to such meets. I appeal to all the Fans to think of some such activities where in all the persons can be kept engaged.

    dear gurujee,

upto singing and antaakshari, its o.k., but, quiz that too musical quiz, one has to be really knowledgable. this is not like you are given an bobjective question paper with say ” true or false ” for the following questions where one can make guess work.

for any entertainment item we participate in such meets to be successfull, it should not in the first place become boring. for that we have to keep it short and sweet and move on to the next item on agenda.

antaakshari, if its a plain sing song its o.k. but too many rules too would make it like 20/20 cricket.

hence, i feel till today in all meets, singing has bee the most successful and joyous form of entertainment carried out.

non singers too become singers with so much josh that it sometimes surprises the individual how he or she accomplished that feat.

a lot of fun too goes along with impromptu singing too as normally silent and shy people would give a picture of not being able to sing.

often such people come out with a bag full of surprises, hence singing – on karoke or just solo or chorus, playing of an instrument, mimicry, jokes and any talent in the art of music would make us all very very happy and bring us extremely close to each other.

the success of any event ( in my considered opinion ) solely depends on how simple we keep it. we should be basically friendly, as we would have met for the first time.

people from different walks of life would have gathered and hence a little bit of concern should be displayed in being kind and well mannered.

we should be open to suggestions, discussions and feee with our ideas.

prior to entering into an event, we should have chalked out what we would basically do on that day, so that we all are aware of what is in store for everyone.

we are just fresh from the eventsof 14th & 15th november 2009 and we can discuss as we are doing now discover new avenues of events to make it more successfull and wherein all can participate without getting bored and shying away from such gatherings.

the cardinal principle being we all are rafi bhakts, we all are amateurs and we all are friends. with this backdrop our future programmes will be much more successful.

above are my views and all of us should give suggestions, which could be extremely useful.

gurujee, thanx for citing this aspect and i am sure more friends will express their views.

Mohan, Ramesh, Devraj, Gurumurthy, Padmaja and Vinatha. Many thanks for your comments about the event. All of us had this unique sense of belonging to an event, to a group, to a cult. In a normal musical show with live orchestra and people seated in an auditorium, even if it is a show of Rafi Sahab’s songs, this kind of atmosphere is not generated. Here we could feel totally at home, it was ‘our’ programme. We all devised it and executed it the way ‘we’ had wanted it. This is besides further cementing our bondings like Gurumurthy remarked. The RAFI HOLIDAY will always be a two-day affair and hence we will all accommodate all activities – singing, Antakshri, Quiz and other events truly associated with Rafi Sahab (for instance we would have all also seen the documentary on Rafi Sahab if we still had time for the same). We will also decorate the entire venue with postcards, graffiti of some of the unforgettable songs of Rafi Sahab. The possibilities are endless and the zeal of Rafi Bhakts is unfathomable. If we have some of the finest singers, we also have class kalakars like Jagatbhai. We also can proudly proclaim that we have the best encyclopaedias on hfm amongst us. We also learn from any shortcomings that may have crept in during the first RAFI HOLIDAY and improvements and improvisations are bound to usher in a glorified future for the RAFI BHAKTS. RAFISM is slowly sinking in, (another khwab of Narayanan). Thanks again for being what you all are – some of the smartest fans of Rafi Sahab.

    Murty Saab:

Aapne toh us din ki yaad ko taaza kar diya…your write up about Nov 14 is detailed and brings out the happiness that your team along with the teams of Chennai and Delhi provided us by gracing Bangalore with your presence and affirming the togetherness of this community of Rafi Bhakts.

And I once again quote from my welcome speech of that day:

“We have gathered as worshippers of that great personality who has moulded each of our lives in many ways…almost every emotion that we feel can be linked to a song sung by the great master and its a link that we have already forged simply by being his disciples and followers.

So today we are simply here as one cohesive group to plainly enjoy, rejoice and bask in the warmth of this friendship between groups of people that transcends all age and religion barriers. ”

My sincere wish is for this RAFI holiday to be a regular one from now onwards!

Bina and Zareef, could not have agreed with you both more. Yes the RAFI HOLIDAY is here to stay and will have its new avatar each year. Can we name it as RAFI DIVAS ?? Think of this. We can surely do with an entire article on the comments itself. That would be great too, umm, lets see maybe we can one of these days. Meanwhile, Ashok Dalmia has sent us all this link to the photos arranged by BBR :

Videos will be uploaded by Zareef on this site by next week and Ashok too will send the DVD of the entire programme around the same time.

Those desirous of obtaining a CD of Jagat Tarkas’ whistling tunes of Rafi Sahab may contact him at his email id : jagattarkas@gmail.com. For those who did not get to hear him, let me tell you that he is the best in the business – he can replicate the songs of Rafi Sahab by his adakari.

    what a wonderful video !!
thanks for putting this up, specially for those people who were not there. while i enjoyed listening to everybody sing, i am very keen to know who the gentleman was who sang Aaj ki Raat Badi Shokh Badi Natkhat hai from Nai Umar ki Nai Fasal. he was just fantastic. perhaps it is also because i just love that song. at the same time i could hear him and see him putting his heart and soul into that song and enjoying every moment of it.

perhaps a little tag on the video (i know it mars the original looks) would help us know who is who….just a crazy suggestion from my side.

adabrafi friends. the topic ‘rafi holiday’ is dear to me, for i have been a part of this project right from its inception. padmanabhan could not have possibly included the names of many rafi bhakts whose contribution for the success of this unique event is matchless. besides the members of rafi foundation, hyderabad chapter, we also thank all the members of rafi foundation chennai chapter, the ever sportive members of baar baar rafi fan club – bangalore and also two of our friends from new delhi. the article would have resembled a “who’s who” if such an attempt at naming all the rafi bhakts would have been resorted to by padmanabhan and the length of the article too would have gone beyond reasonable limits. that was the reason why he could not name anyone in his otherwise superb article.

foremost, i would salute some of the rafi bhakts from bangalore who made all the ground level arrangements. b g raj, president of baar baar rafi fan club (bbr in short), p narayanan (p.r.o), ashok dalmia (secretary), manish jagirdar, mukund pandurangi, bina krishna, asha vijay were leading from the front when it mattered most. bbr took care of everything that was needed.

during my conversations with all the above on several occasions, i could not convey much of what we at hyderabad had visualized. we had a dream and it was longing to be fulfilled. there were several areas that we had to discuss – antakshri, quiz, mike systems, venue, lunch/tea etc., programme content, etc. yet, the atmosphere that had to be created and as visualized by us was something that we could never either fully discuss or convey. we left it at that hoping that we will cross the bridge when we approach the river. but friends, let me surprise you all with the disclosure that whatever was in our minds here in hyderabad, could have possibly been read by our friends in bangalore. it was as if telepathy was at work (we even coined the word rafipathy) as 14th november 2009 unfolded with precision like similarity between our thoughts and actual happenings. we never had any reason to butt in or suggest alternatives. everything that we had wanted was happening. every half hour or so, some of our friends had asked me if all was fine and whether everything as we had visualized was taking shape. and each time, i was found repeating the same words to bg raj, manish, ashok, narayanan – that i was actually seeing our dream come true to the last detail.

we had known all along that we had very good singers amidst us – k s ramachandran (chandan to most of us), asha, alka, radha, etc. almost everyone who had attended the programme was a singer in his/her right and we enjoyed some of the finest renditions. we from hyderabad had not heard some rafi bhakts like m v devraj, raji hari, surender, srinivasan etc. almost all those who presented their songs on 14th november 2009 swept us off our feats. raji hari presented a very absorbing non film ghazal of rafi sahab. while on the topic of a female singing the songs of rafi sahab, the distaff rafi bhakts from bangalore all sang the songs of the legend. besides the best of renditions from almost all, i would like to point out the magnanimity of bbr in restraining their members from singing more and giving the maximum opportunity to rafi bhakts from other centres. so much so, that two very fine singers whom i had heard – manish jagirdar and ananya – did not sing at all. this despite my several requests to manish. this establishes the affection and care that bbr showers on rafi bhakts from yonder. this is highly creditable on their part.

we had seen asha-vijay present some very interesting ‘antakshri’ bits in our egroup for sometime and she excelled once again in her presentations. manish and ashok dalmia assisted her and the hi-tech antakshri was a huge success.

vinatha is a powerhouse of knowledge of hfm and songs of rafi sahab. she prepared a very interesting tough looking quiz, again with the aid of audio/video clips and the laptop. bina took up the mantle to present the quiz and now mukund and manish were at her side assisting her and the various teams. once again a highly successful event for each of us to enjoy and relish for a very long time.

krishnamurthy is already a very famous man in music circles in bangalore. come a peppy number and he immediately would spring on his toes, tip-topping to make the best use of available space for his dancing skills. he is simply majestic to watch and can make one feel part of picturization of a shammi kapoor starrer movie. believe me friends, he is simply amazing and excels in his chosen means of entertainment. but that is not all. he can sing too and he presented a telugu song of rafi sahab, with all the mannerisms intact.

snigdha, the rj in a fm channel in bangalore matched step for step the tripudiation of krishnamurthy. fantastic sigth km and snigdha – this was the toast of the day.

the knowledge-gurus on rafi sahab : the omnipresent gurumurthy (readers would know him for his various in-depth articles on this website), bina, vinatha, km (again), sanjay deshpande, satyendra, r padmanabhan, chandan etc. we can pit these against the best in the country folks – make good use of such experts who are in the rafi fraternity.

friends, i will often write on this subject in this thread. there are many more aspects to the rafi holiday than i have discussed above that need to be narrated. all things considered however, we went to bangalore to meet some of our friends who we had met earlier, many whom we had never met but had known through emails, etc and to listen to their melodious singing. we did all of these and made everlasting friendship for the rest of our lives. that was the biggest gain for us. long live to the rafi fraternity.

    SECRETARY
    RAFI FOUNDATION,
    Hyderabad Chapter.

Rafi sahab was not only a great singer but also a great person. There were many instances which proved that he was not money minded and would go to any extent to help others. It’s a sheer pity that our government has failed to acknowledge the contributions made by Rafi sahab.

It seems Rafi Saab was visualising Dev Anand’s expressions. Each and every word of the song looks like that. The mood of depression on the face of Dev Anand has been brought out nicely by Rafi Saab.
It is nothing but a tragi-comedy that one of the judges in a recent singing competition asked the participant why he had chosen such an easy Rafi song after he had completed the song. Such is the ignorance of todays judges of music competition

    Absolutely fantastic, Murty.

Not a truer word said. It is also absolutely true that those who like Rafi Saahab have that innate simplicity and humility in a manner reminiscent of the Legend himself. It is impossible to like some particular thing in a persona the other aspects of whom do not attract you eqally. Rafi Saahab had that aura around him. Thanks for sharing your thoughts so comprehensively amongst us.

    dearest murtygaru,

for the first time you have given me an opportunity to truly understand a small part of your simple but endearing personality – which has gone to form a person with a name called ” addanki murty “.

i read your entire write up with rapt attention and did not lift my gaze untill i completed it and funnilly i was looking frantically and scrolling down to see more would be coming, but, to my utter dismay – i found you had finished writing.

your take on the rafi bhakts and their personalities is ” extremely warm “, highly encouraging and raises us to hand shaking distance of the maestro himself.

your discription of the bhakts is so very true and realistuic that every bhakt will see a part of himself in your writings.

words fail me as i sit to write but one truth i must confess to you sir and vasu-kay-jee :-

there were moments in both your write ups which made me cry my heart out and continued doing so till i was fully satiated and the pathos subsided for that moment.

murtygaru, do not waste any more time – pleas give us that deadly account of ” how you became a rafi fan “. eagerly awaited.

agar yah trailer thaa toh main movie kiasaa hogaa !!!!!!!!!!!!

murtygaru – truly proud to be called your friend, the one i would not loose for anything as long as i and you are in this mortal shape.

it was my personal pleasure to have set my comments on your write up, every word i have said, is true and sad part is you deserve much more as accolades – i dont have the vocab to fullfull that.

Murtygaru, among selfless Rafi fans, you are there on the top. Your inclusion of Vasudha’s article shows how much you thrive on spreading the good word about Rafi saab. You are always on the alert and ensure that even a tiny bit about Rafi saab is read by all by putting it on websites on email groups. Your article encapsulates tha humbleness of rafi saab and his magical voice while at the same time giving a warm account of Rafi fans across the globe. Three cheers to you Murtygaru.
Vasudha’s hatke account goes straight to the heart. Beneath her light-hearted writeup lies her admiration for Rafi saab. She has translated her golden memories and her thoughts into a highly readable and enjoyable article.

Rameshbhai, Vasudhaji and Uttaraji. It is my fortune to have known great music lovers, great fans of Rafi Sahab, people endowed with the best of human values, etc. like all of you (I also met the three of you the last time I was in Bangalore). There are many more big-time Rafi Bhakts who are doing much more and what I do is miniscule when compared to their deeds. Some of them have been my inspiration. I have seen youngsters, less than half my age, devoting so much time and money on assembling the songs of Rafi Sahab, audio and video, and are so much more knowledgeable than me. They have given me the pep in life to do my bit. Thanks again for your lovely and wonderful comments. I am glad that we are all part of that journey which will see us through re-discovering Rafi Sahab in all new perspective.

I would just like to endorse what all have said in their comments and add this little piece -
No one displaced anybody – neither Rafisaab, neither Kishoreda, neither Mukeshsaab, neither Mannasaab, neither Talatsaab, neither Mahendrasaab or any other renowned singers/musicians for that matter.
It was just the time when each of them found thenselves relevant with the listeners, the trends set in by the socio-cultural times, the moods of the generation and their times-whether tranquil or turbulent. Each of these legends had a contribution of their own. But there is no denying that Rafisaab stood out and was relevant at all times; in fact he touched the lives of the people right from birth to grave !. Now isn’t that great !. Who else could describe a person – In birth, in childhood, in adolscence, in teen, the mature, the family man, the renunciation, the deliverance !. Who else could describe the pathetic state of mortal life – whether in poverty, whether in richness, whether in stupor, whether in insanity or in detachment !.
Rafisaab was always there – Omnipresent !. Somewhere he has touched our lives and continues to be even today !. How relevant he is !.

But somehwhere we (shall I say ‘I’) continue to forget one person in midst of all – Saigal Saab !. I see a streak of Saigalsaab’s style of rendition in all the great singers mentioned hereinbefore. All have tried to imitate him during their formative years. Am I right ?.
As far as my little knowledge goes – even Rafisaab admitted it with all sincerity and humbleness. Kishoreda openly flaunted it and Mukeshsaab displayed it !. Yeh shayad sachh hai ki film/laghugayan/adhunik gayan ki gayaki ka neev shayad Kundan saab hi diya ho !. Can we accept that !?

Personally, I have heard hundreds of singers who try to copy, imitate or even try to absorb this legend’s type of singing. But they are not even close to Rafi Sahab. Because Rafi Sahab had a unique quality. He sang patriotic songs, ghazals, semi classical, classical, qawallis, sad songs, happy songs, devotional songs bhajans etc etc. They all had an outstanding quality. This itself shows that he was Blessed by the Almighty God.

I strongly feel that the faqeer whom Rafi Sahab (as a child) used to follow him when he used to visit his house on Thursday (Shab-e-Jummah) and try to imitate his singing. That faqeer was not an ordinary man, he was an Angel. He must have given his blessings to Rafi Sahab. His songs are soulful, filled with roohaniyat. He used to regularly offer Namaaz-e-shab along with his regular five times of prayers. He used to fast for 30 days in Ramzaan. When he used to offer Jummah prayers at Bandra mosque, his sherwaani pockets were filled with bundles of 100 rupee bills.

After prayers, he used to empty his pockets giving alms to the poor. First week of every month, more than 1500 poor people used to collect their regular “pension” from “Rafi Villa”. Each envelope had their name on it and they used to sign or give their thumb impression and collect their envelope.

Once Naushad sahab called Rafi Sahab and said that the prayer mats at Bandra mosque are torn and worn out. The next day Rafi Sahab made arrangements to change the entire prayer mats at the mosque.

I personally know a lady (still alive) she is related to Fazal Nawaz Jung Bahadur from Hyderabad. She had developed some kind of cancer of Thyroid. Her surgery was in J.J. hospital in Bombay. She went door to door to collect donations from various film personalities and businessmen. According to this lady the highest amount was given by Rafi sahab. The amount was Rs. 10,000. This was in early seventies. Rafi sahab didn’t even ask her to sign any paper and this lady was a total stranger to him. He gave her cash.

He used to wake up at 3:00 am offer namaz-e-shab and then practice till fajar azaan, then offer fajar prayer, recite Quran and then go for his regular badminton game at the gymkhana. On his return, he will take a shower, have his breakfast and then visit 3-4 different music directors. Between 2-5 pm, he used to record the songs. Never had any bad vices. Always smiling, never involve in any kind of gossip, if people used to say things about others, he would refrain from even replying to them. A thorough saint; a thorough gentleman.

    Murtyji,
what a great devotional piece stright from the heart. The greatest tribute to a musician is if he can provide one moment of joy, one moment of sadness wiped away by an enthralling voice and melody. I am a humble fan of rafi and once when I was singing his “teri ankhon ke siwa duniya rakha kya hai..” in our club, at the end one supervisor from our factory shook my hands and said I was in a sad mood today , and your song lifted me up. i immediately forwarded this to my idol Sri rafi’ sahab. Such is the power of his voice and the songs
